Previously we studied space. Today we are examining light, the forth Element of Design. From what we have discussed before, did you identify different spaces in your home using the three dimensions? Read previous articles to review the Essentials of Design.
This quick examination of light, along with my other articles, will give you another perspective that open windows bring to the appeal of a home. If done correctly, staging uses the Essentials of Design to dramatically enhance an area.

Light: Many books have been written about lighting because it is important to our perception. The lighting in a room determines the mood of the room and how we observe everything in it. When you enter a room and feel you belong there, the lighting may be responsible for welcoming you in. Colors in a room can appear dramatically different depending on the light it's receiving or reflecting. Light can direct your focus to a specific area in a room such as the light striking a painting calling your attention to it. |

- Natural light should be used as much as possible by opening up the window areas. It is an important room feature and should be emphasized. How wall colors and other things appear in natural light, not only depends on the time of day, but also on the time of year. In summer natural light tends to be brighter and lasts much longer, while in winter it's very cozy but doesn't last as long. If natural lighting is in short supply, there is a wide range of artificial lighting that can augment it.

- Artificial light influences the nighttime ambiance. It can be dramatic or quaint using dimmers for lighting control on those non-moonlit nights. Different types of artificial lighting will change our perception still more. An example of this would be how the colors from a Tiffany lamp might suggest a mood in a room. Don't be afraid to experiment.

If you have large windows, open them up to show them off. Putting a special lamp in the window will show it off from the outside as well. After a day at the office, use timers to trigger an ambiance waiting for you. Play with the different light sources in your home and see what you can do.
Until next time, happy Home Staging and Styling. |
